If the two wifi antennas are pointed upwards the the total height becomes 13.9 cm. They have to be aimed upwards to be used unless a network cable is used. On the rear you find the two wifi antennas folded vertically. The right of the front shows an input selector (internet radio, iPod/USB or music server), a cursor ring, a play/pause button and a USB input for a storage devices. On the front left there is a standby switch plus LED, the middle contains a large FL display. The device under test measures 43.4 x 7.3 x 29.7 cm and weighs 2.9 kg. As a bonus it’s also an Apple Airplay station so you can stream audio directly from your iPhone, iPad and Mac to the Denon. Pepper without ‘whites’ between the tracks nicely. I also have to mention that gapless playback used to be a problem on many DLNA players but current Denon players handle live albums and for instance Sgt. Sonos is limited to 30,000 to 40,000 tracks, depending on the metadata en cover art.

I have tested the Denon with 119,460 tracks, over 8,000 albums, all including full metadata and cover art. DLNA has another advantage: there is no limit to the size of your music collection. Especially people that like classical music will like the versatility of JRiver and Minim to set up search fields like orchestra, director and composer. It is donation ware, so it is up to you what you pay. If you look for a lightweight server that does only music (the DLNA standard caters for photos and video too), MinimServer is very good though somewhat complex to tweak. Very good and easy to use is the JRiver Media Center server that doubles as a bit perfect audio (and video) player on the computer it is installed on.

The best ones let you even set your own menu-items. Simple server software gives you only ‘artist’ and ‘album’ to make your selection while the better ones offer albums within artists, composers and genre. As with all DLNA players, the speed and structure of the music menus depend completely on the DLNA server.

Older servers, like my beefed up HP Windows Home Server SP2 (WHS) won’t, unless you install other DLNA server software or tweak the Twonky Media server that is standard on WHS. To playback DSD files you have to be sure your DLNA server supports DSF and DFF files. It will play about any audio file that is DRM-free: WMA, MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, ALAC en AIFF up to 192 kHz 24 bit and DSD64 files in DSF and DFF wrappers.

Or is it because it’s so easy to fit all the electronics in a compact housing?Īnyway, the Denon DNP-730AE on review here conforms to the other components in the Denon 730 series in black or silver and with its 43 cm width will combine with many other full size components. Is that a marketing trick to have it look like ‘real new’. A networked audio player can be seen as the new cd-player, so why not have it look the same? Many networked audio players come in shapes that do not match the amplifier.
